Zycortal® Injectable Suspension (desoxycorticosterone pivalate injectable suspension)
ZYCORTAL Suspension is given subcutaneously as replacement therapy for mineralocorticoid deficiency in dogs with primary hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s disease)
What is Zycortal® Suspension?
Zycortal Suspension is an injectable medication used as replacement therapy in dogs with primary hypoadrenocorticism (Addison's disease). Zycortal Suspension replaces mineralocorticoids which are deficient in dogs with Addison's.
Uses:
For use as replacement therapy for mineralocorticoid deficiency in dogs with primary hypoadrenocorticism (Addison's disease).

Possible Side Effects:
Adverse reactions can occur and may include polyuria, polydipsia, depression/lethargy, inappropriate urination, alopecia, decreased appetite/anorexia, panting, vomiting, diarrhea, and shaking/trembling.
Drug & Food Interactions:
The effectiveness of Zycortal Suspension may be reduced if potassium-sparing diuretics, such as spironolactone, are administered concurrently.
Precautions:
Any dog presenting with severe hypovolemia, dehydration, pre-renal azotemia and inadequate tissue perfusion must be rehydrated with intravenous fluid (saline) therapy before starting treatment with Zycortal Suspension.
Important safety information:
As with all drugs, side effects may occur. In field studies and post-approval experience, the most common side effects reported were: polyuria, polydipsia, depression/lethargy, pain on injection, weight gain, inappropriate urination, alopecia, decreased appetite/anorexia, panting, vomiting, diarrhea, shaking/trembling, polyphagia, urinary tract infection, urinary tract incontinence, anaphylaxis, anemia, restlessness and collapse. Death or euthanasia has been associated with some of the adverse events listed above. ZYCORTAL Suspension should be used with caution in dogs with congestive heart disease, edema, severe renal disease or primary hepatic failure. Dogs presenting in Addisonian crisis must be rehydrated with appropriate intravenous therapy before starting treatment with ZYCORTAL Suspension.
